I’m actually supposed to be working right now, but I’m putting it off because I don’t feel like it.

So I figured I’ld come write a article here and then maybe I’ll feel like working.

Do you want to increase your conversion rate?

Of course you do…

Before I tell you how, let’s talk about why people don’t buy.

1. They don’t want your product(if that’s the case they shouldn’t be looking at your copy - target your advertising better)

2. They don’t trust you or believe your product will do what you say it will.

3. They plan on buying but procrastinate(like I’m doing now) and never get around to it.

Like I said #1 shouldn’t be a problem because you know not to advertise Wrinkle Cream to teens looking for the latest Rap CD.

Now I’m going to tell you how to get your customers to like and trust you within the first few paragraphs of your copy.

How?

Most of you have heard the phrase: “People like people that are like them”

They’re also more trusting of people like them.

I think I first heard that on a Tony Robbins cassette way back when I was kid and it’s the truth. It’s basic Psychology for people to gravitate toward others that are similar to them.

If we want to use this to our advantage in our sales copy we have to first learn who are customers are and what they want(you should already know). The more you know about your customers the better.

Let’s say we’re selling a new Diet Product.

Don’t tell the customer you’re a professional body builder or model. If you do that, they will see you are not like them and you’ll lose alot of sales right there.

Fat people might dislike or envy people who’ve never had the same problem they are trying to fix.

You should tell them that you’ve also had trouble with your weight for most of your life. Tell them you know how it feels to be ignored or to have people laugh at you because you’re fat.

Try to hit on emotional experiences they’ve had and let them know you’ve had the same problems.

You want to make them think you’re just like them. Then, once you’ve done that you can move on and tell them how you overcame the same problem they’re facing and sell them the product.

So build trust before you try to sell your product. Provide proof that you are qualified to solve the persons problem. Give proof that you have solved other peoples problems.

Just do yourself a favor and change your copy so it builds trust like that and test it against your old copy. I’m not saying it will always boost your conversion rate but in some markets it can make a huge difference.

Some of you may have noticed there have been no articles/entries/posts(whatever you want to call it) for a few weeks…

The reason for that is because I was on vacation in the Bahamas for a week. I spent some time on Grand Bahama(Lucaya), as well as Nassau.

I’m considering buying a nice little 2 bedroom condo on Grand Bahama so I can spend part of the year there. It’s an amazing place, and it’s growing at an incredible rate. Billions of dollars are being spent on development and real estate values are going to sky rocket over the next 5-10 years.

I did a little fishing(more on that later), and alot of drinking and gambling.

Whenever I go on vacation I always set aside a specific amount on money I’m willing to lose in the casino. If I lose it all, I stop and it’s no big deal. This time I was luckier than usual because after 20+ hours(overall, not at once!) of Blackjack, I was up by $200 bucks! I know that’s not much, but it’s nice when you were expecting to lose more than that.

Actually, I was down a little bit when I sat down to play for the last time, then I hit a big winning streak. Can’t beat being paid to be entertained. Oh yeah… I also placed third in a Blackjack tournament with over 100 people.

One of my favorite parts of vacation is checking my sales when I get home. This time I came home to a pleasent surprise…

My sales were almost double the average on most the days I was gone!

Maybe I should take more vacations?

Now back to the fishing. I was thinking about business and fishing and realized there were some big similarities. Enough similarities, that I would say a good fisherman already knows what it takes to run a successful business.

So here’s the lesson…

When you go fishing, you have a fishing pole, lures, bait and whatever else. You don’t have to reinvent the tools used to catch fish, that would be a waste of time.

The same is true for business. You don’t waste time reinventing the tools when they have already been created.

What about how you catch fish. You don’t whip them with the pole, or chase them around the ocean with a hook in your hand.

You learn the proper technique for casting, setting the hook, and reeling them in. No need to reinvent the technique.

The method for running a successful business is the same. You learn from others how it’s done and then do the same thing. The “technique” used to sell has already been discovered, no need to start from scratch.

Now what’s the difference between a fisherman that easily comes back with his limit of fish and one that struggles to get half that?

It’s the same as the difference between a successful businessman and one that fails.

The better fisherman, knows where the fish are. So while the other fisherman is out looking for good fishing spots, the better fisherman is busy catching his limit of fish.

It’s not that one knows the area better than the other, it’s just that the better fisherman did the research and let other fisherman before him find the good spots.

This couldn’t be more similar to what you do when you’re looking for a profitable market to sell to.

Don’t waste time looking for new never before touched markets when there are others out there that have already found the best ones.

Alot of people new to business(niche marketing or whatever else), try to reinevent the process and tools of selling.

Others think they can only sell to markets that have no competitors. They want to be original, and avoid copying others.

Listen… The process is freely available for you to learn, and the markets/fishing spots have already been found.

The quickest way to success is by copying other successful people. Not plagerism or product theft, but finding whats selling and competeing for those sales.

Let other people find the hot markets, while you focus on exploiting them.

That’s exactly how I run my business now. I no longer spend time trying to be original or looking for untouched markets.

I simply take a look at what other people are doing well with, have a similar or better product created, and then directly compete with those people.

Right now I’m preparing to launch another niche product, as well as having one made that I will launch in two or three weeks. Both are far from original, in fact one has at least 10 competing niche ebooks.

Don’t listen to people that whine about copying, let them waste their time being original while you take their customers.

Many people use testing solutions that don’t perform well for testing. Some people just split Adwords traffic and disregard the rest of their traffic, which makes the test take longer and doesn’t give a truly valid result at the end of the test.

Instead of trying to sell you some overpriced, underperforming split testing product, I’ll just give you a good script I made about a year ago to do my testing.

I have another one that’s much more advanced, that is probably better than any other testing script available, but the problem is making it user friendly.

That’s going to be a problem with this one as well, because I make the scripts for me to use and making it user friendly is harder than making it functional.

I’ll try to explain how to set this script up as best as I can, but it might not be enough.

First we have the main testing script which will be named: index.php

You will place this in your home directory where your current index.htm or index.html file is located. It’s important that you rename your other index file to something else or this script will not work.

Browsers first look for index.htm and index.html before they look for index.php, so if one of those is still there, no one will get to the script.

The script begins with <#php and ends with #>

With this and the next script you will need to change the # to a ?. I couldn’t put the real begginning and end code here so I had to substitute the begginning and end of each script.

Just copy and paste it into notepad and then save it as index.php

Here it is:

<#php
header(”P3P: CP=\”CAO DSP AND SO ON\”");
$test = $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS[”test”];
$stats = file(”results.txt”);
if ($test == “”) {
$test = rand(1, 2);
setcookie(”test”,$test,time()+2419200);
if ($test == 1) {
$stats[0] = $stats[0] + 1;
$stats[0] = “$stats[0]\n”;
}
if ($test == 2) {
$stats[2] = $stats[2] + 1;
$stats[2] = “$stats[2]\n”;
}
}
if ($test == 1) {
$show = file_get_contents(”original.htm”);
}
if ($test == 2) {
$show = file_get_contents(”test.htm”);
}
$fp = fopen( “results.txt”, “w” );
fwrite( $fp, “$stats[0]$stats[1]$stats[2]$stats[3]” );
fclose( $fp );
echo $show;
#>

The reason for the header is because some browsers won’t except a cookie unless they recieve a privacy header.

The cookie is set for 2419200 seconds which works out to 4 weeks. You can edit this if you want, just remember to put the number in seconds.

Now what this script does is take new visitors to your website and randomly split them between your two pages and tag them with a cookie. The next time they return the cookie will tell the script that they have been there before and it will show them the same page they saw last time. It will continue to do this until the cookie expires.

This script does not use any redirects because they can mess up your SEO(Search Engine Optimization). The script runs the test Dynamicly which means the webpage is created on the fly.

Now you need understand the two files it draws the webpage from. The first is original.htm, which is your control, or current webpage. The second is test.htm, which is the second version of your webpage that has the changes your are testing.

Make sure both of these files are in the same directory as the testing script.

………………………………..

Now for the Thank You script that records sales. You will link to this script from your Thank You page(where customers are sent after ordering or subscribing) with a image link.

Just place the following code somewhere on your Thankyou page:

< img border=”0″ src=”thankyou.php” width=”1″ height=”1″ >

(you’ll need to remove the space after < and the space before >)

It won’t change the way it looks but it will run the thankyou.php script when the webpage is loaded.

Ok here’s the script for the Thank You Script… Just name it thankyou.php and place it in the same directory as your thank you page.

<#php
header(”P3P: CP=\”CAO DSP AND SO ON\”");
$test = $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS[”test”];
$done = $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS[”done”];
$stats = file(”results.txt”);
if ($done == 1) {
exit;
}
if ($test == 1) {
$stats[1] = $stats[1] + 1;
$stats[1] = “$stats[1]\n”;
}
if ($test == 2) {
$stats[3] = $stats[3] + 1;
$stats[3] = “$stats[3]\n”;
}
setcookie(”done”,1,time()+6048000);
$fp = fopen( “results.txt”, “w” );
fwrite( $fp, “$stats[0]$stats[1]$stats[2]$stats[3]” );
fclose( $fp );
#>

Now we’re almost done but we still need to talk about the results.txt file. This is the file that records your visits and sales for each page in the test.

You need to make this file by opening Notepad and putting the following in it:

Start
0
0
0
0
End

Don’t put the start or end in the file, I just put those there to make it easier to understand. Just put the four zeros with each one on a new line.

Now save this as results.txt and upload it to the same directory as your thank you page.

You will probably want to CHMOD it to 666. Most FTP software has a CHMOD option that will let you set this. If it doesn’t, it will still probably work anyway.

When you want to check the current stats of your test you will need to look at this file. You’ll probably see something like this:

1342
12
1356
15

Here’s what it means:

1342 - Number of people that saw original.htm
12 - Number of sales from people that saw original.htm
1356 - Number of people that saw test.htm
15 - Number of sales from people that saw test.htm

And there you have it… Pretty simple eh?(laugh)

I hope everyone will be able to understand this but I know it will be like gibberish to some people. I don’t have time to offer any support for people with trouble but if enough people have the same problem I’ll try to help.

TIP:
Another big mistake people make when testing is not waiting until their results are statistically valid. The whole “40 actions” or “1000 visitors” or “Super Lost Testing Algorithm” won’t cut it.

None of those are based on real accepted statistics. The real way to tell if a result is statistically valid is to use a statistics equation called Chi Squared and in our case we add a Yates Correction. Please don’t try to learn how to do this by hand unless your good in math. I learned it awhile back and it was a pain in the butt.

Instead I suggest you use the simple calculator I made: http://www.200proofmarketing.com/statcalc.php

Just follow the instructions, enter your test results and it will tell you how valid your results are.

Never, and I mean Never, tell another marketer what your niches are and how well you are doing. If you do you’re only hurting your self. All you’re really doing is telling them to hurry up and become a competitor, which will hurt your profits.

I got this advice directly from John Reese right after I created my first successful niche product and experience has shown he was 100% right. I desperately wanted to show it off but if I had, it would have cost me alot of my future sales because 10 people would have immediately created competing products.

Steps to Creating a Profitable Niche Product:

1. Find a Hungry Market
2. Find out what that market desperetly wants.
3. Develop or have developed a product that fills your markets needs.
4. Write a Sales Letter for your product.
5. Get a Domain Name and create a Website.
6. Setup a PPC campaign and send traffic to the site.
7. Seek out affiliates and possible JV’s within your Market.
8. Begin Optimizing your Advertising.
9. Start Testing to improve your conversion rate.
10. Write some articles for your market to get free traffic.
11. Create or find backend products.

I’m going to cover each one of those steps in detail. Some are simple and some are too complicated for me do justice(like Copywriting).

I think I covered the first two steps already so I’ll go to the third step.

On to Step 3 - Creating your Product

Like I said before, I’m creating a niche product while I write this so that I’m less likely to miss something.

This is the step I’m currently on. My product is in a specialized niche and I’m not going to trust a freelance writer to do the topic justice so I’m writing it my self.

This is where I should tell you that the quality of your product is very important. If you want to get good testimonials (that will increase your sales) and if you want anyone to buy your backend products, you need to overdeliver.

That doesn’t mean you can’t outsource the creation of your products. The product I’m working on is kind of an exception to the rule because I’m positioning my self as an expert in a rather large market by creating several niche products and I can’t do that if I’m not really an expert can I?

There are three ways to create your product. Actually there’s probably more but I can only think of three right now.

The first and most common method is to create the product your self. That might seem a little scary to some people but it’s not that bad and most people are surpised at how much easier it is than they had thought.

The most common type of niche product right now is a Ebook so I’ll talk about that. I recommend you use a good word processing program to write in. Something like MS Word is fine or anything with spell check.

Now the first thing your going to need to do is become a expert on the topic you will be writing about. Lazy people spend a few hours reading about the topic on the net and then try to create a product, that ends up “under-delivering”. I recommend you put in some extra time and go get at least one book about the subject, and preferably two or three. Read the books and take notes from start to finish. Write down any important information you learn as you learn it. When you’re finished with the books, do some research on the ‘net and get a few notes from that.

Now you should have a ton of notes and great information about your market. The next step is to create the Table of Contents for your book. Once you have it laid out the way you like it, organize your notes according to the chapter or section they will go into. This pretty much writes the book for you but you’ll need to expand on many of the notes you took.

All that’s left is to start writing. For each chapter you now have a pile of important information to include. Just write freely, don’t worry about spelling errors or anything like that, just try to include all the notes you took in a clear, easy to understand way.

Using this method I can usually write a book in two or three weeks.

Once you’re done, you should proofread it two or three times yourself and then have someone else proofread it for you because you will miss errors. I proof read one of my books about 10 times and somehow missed the most easy to spot typo’s. I found that my most common typo, was writing “you” instead of “your”.

The second method is to have your product created for you. There are a ton of Freelance sites out there but the most popular right now is Elance.com .

The large amount of Freelance writers looking to write for money is outweighing the amount of work available, and competition for jobs has driven the price down to sometimes absurd levels.

Don’t be too quick to jump on the lowest price, try to verify that other people have been happy with the writer before you decide.

That’s about it. Tell the writer exactly what you want(like which questions need to be answered or what problems need to be solved).

The third way is to use Public Domain material to create your product. I haven’t done this so I can’t help you with it. There’s a lot of good information out there about it though. Just do some research.

The definition of Niche is: a position particularly well suited to the person who occupies it; “he found his niche in the academic world”

But that’s not really what I’m talking about when I say “Niche.” Maybe it should be called “Highly Targeted, Small Market Marketing” instead because that’s what it is.

The Golf Market is not a niche; it’s too big to be a niche in my opinion. But you can find niches in that market, like “30 Days to Tiger Woods Putting” or “10 Steps to Getting on the PGA Tour”. Products like this aren’t targeted at the entire golf market; instead they focus on smaller markets within the golf market. It’s a fact that the more targeted your visitors are, the more profitable your business will be(better conversion rates, ROI, etc).

When you advertise a niche product like “30 Days to Tiger Woods Putting” you don’t advertise to people looking for golf clubs, golf magazines, golf balls, or how to fix a slice. You advertise only to the people that want to putt better, or maybe even the people that want to improve their overall golf game.

I should probably warn you that unless you get Tiger Woods’s permission, it may be a bad idea to create that exact product.

Tip: If you use PPC to advertise a niche product for keywords that aren’t very targeted(like “Improve my golf game”), you could qualify your prospects in your Ad by writing it so that only those interested in putting better click on it. That will greatly increase your ROI and Conversion Rate because you won’t have untargeted people clicking the ad.

The first step to creating a profitable niche product is finding a hungry market. The niche product I’m working on now kind of fell into my lap so research wasn’t done in the normal way. It’s related to another one of my successful niche products so the main research I did was on a competitor that appears to be making a lot of money.

When it comes to finding a niche, the most common advice is to use one of those search tools that tells you how many times a keyword or phrase has been searched for. That’s not a bad thing to do, and it’s definitely useful information. What it doesn’t tell you is how “hungry” that market is.

To find out how hungry a market is, you should check out forums related to that market and look at what people are asking. Are there a lot of people looking for answers about specific topics? Are they getting good answers? Do they look desperate for answers or help? Forums not only tell you how hungry the market is but they also tell you exactly what that market wants, so you can create a product that contains everything your market wants to know.

To really understand which niche products sell and which ones don’t, you need to look at some good examples. One place you could do this is the Clickbank Marketplace. Go through each category and sub category and look at the top 10 or 20 products. Those are the ones that are selling.

You don’t have to be original or innovative. Don’t “reinvent the wheel”, when you can easily see what’s working and create a product for an already proven market.

Now pick something that you know is selling, that has a hungry market, and that doesn’t have too many competitors(but some are good).
